Where to Start Your South Lake Tahoe Bike Ride — And Where to Go

South Lake Tahoe has some of the best paved bike trails in the Sierra, but before you pick a bike, it's worth picking your starting point. Where you launch from shapes what kind of ride you'll have — so here's a breakdown by location, plus three ride lengths to fit your day.

Two Main Starting Zones In South Lake Tahoe

Central Town, on the Trail

Tahoe Bike Company sits right on the paved trail system in the middle of town, walkable from most in-town lodging or a short uber ride away. It also has plenty of parking. No driving required to start pedaling. From here, trails branch in multiple directions, and the ride out toward Camp Richardson crosses the Upper Truckee River marsh — a genuinely scenic stretch where the river feeds into the lake, not just a pass-through. It's also the only shop in town offering hourly rentals (bikes and e-bikes) starting at one hour, versus the Emerald Bay Road shops 'longer minimums' — handy if you just want a quick spin rather than committing to a half or full day.

Emerald Bay Road

There is a cluster of bike shops established on the way to Emerald Bay. Historically, this was a good starting point for short rides into the Tahoe National Forest which starts very close to these shops. It still is a good starting point if you want a short ride to Pope Beach or Camp Richardson on a regular bike, but on e-bikes you may find you will quickly make the rounds. Perhaps too quickly?

Plan Your Ride by Time

1 Hour — Quick Loop

Best from Tahoe Bike Company, since it's the only shop renting by the hour. Head out toward the marsh crossing and even push to Cove East and back, or do a short loop through town. Enough time to get a feel for the trail without any real commitment.

2 Hours — Beach Run

From Tahoe Bike Company, two hours gets you to the marsh and partway toward Camp Richardson on a regular bike — or, on an e-bike, comfortably out to Camp Richardson, Baldwin Beach and back, since the extra distance barely matters with pedal assist. From the Emerald Bay Road shops, two hours is plenty to reach Pope Beach or Baldwin Beach and back with time to relax lake side.

4 Hours — Full Exploration

This is where starting from Tahoe Bike Company pays off. With four hours, ride the full stretch out past the marsh to Camp Richardson, detour to Baldwin Beach, and still have time to explore one of the other trails branching off in a different direction — something the single-direction Emerald Bay Rd routes don't offer as naturally.

Which South Lake Tahoe Bike Rental Starting Point Is Best?

●     Staying near the beaches, want the shortest ride on regular bikes? Start on Emerald Bay Road.

●     Staying in town, want route variety, scenery, or just an hour on a bike? Start at Tahoe Bike Company.

●     Renting an e-bike for Baldwin Beach? The extra distance from Tahoe Bike Company is barely a factor — and you get the marsh crossing as a bonus.

Either way, you're minutes from some of the best paved lakeside riding in the country. Pick your starting point based on your legs, your time, your type of bike, and how far you want to see.
